Night of Museums in National Széchényi Library on June 24, 2017!

Take a walk in National Széchényi Library preserving the golden basis of Hungarian national heritage! Have a look at the treasures of our János Arany exhibition, including manuscripts of Toldi trilógia (Toldy Trilogy), Tetemrehívás (Call to Corpse) and other works by Arany. Get to know Alajos Stróbl, a sculptor of Arany, visit our exhibition presenting the golden age of Hungarian sound films, and listen to the related concert of Hot Jazz Band! Bid for treasures at our auction, and take a walk in our repositories with a flashlight! Look forward to a Midsummer Night’s chase after Shakespeare heroes, to an Ady manuscript that has been hiding until recently, and to the music of the golden age of Hungarian cartoons, from Pom Pom to Nagy Ho-Ho-Ho-Horgász (Great Fisherman)!

A NIGHT IN HELSINGOER
A Midsummer Night’s chase after Shakespeare heroes. Play and investigation in the library! Find and identify Shakespeare’s famous and infamous figures you might know from translations by János Arany.

Poster exhibition – Over 100 posters from the period between 1931 and 1944!

HOT JAZZ BAND

Concert of the jazz band celebrating the 30th anniversary of its foundation. The concert will be related to our poster exhibition, with the band playing from the music of films starring Karády, Kabos and Jávor.

SAFE IS OPEN – GOING, GOING, GONE!
Auction for the fifth time, at friendly prices and in a friendly environment. Throughout the centuries, passion for collection, desire to possess and bibliophile commitment saved a great many books and documents from decay. Old and new books, storybooks, dime novels, newspapers, maps, posters and other surprise items offered by staff members and friends of National Széchényi Library! Test yourself: can you be an ardent collector? Can you fight to the end with your head high?

VIVALDI: FOUR SEASONS PERFORMED BY THE BUDAPEST CHAMBER ORCHESTRA

Budapest Chamber Orchestra formed of virtuoso musicians of the Hungarian State Opera will perform Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi, one of the most beautiful and most popular classical musical compositions. Soloists include Alexandre Dimcevski (France), Nóra Stankowsky and Erzsébet Hutás. Participants will be the string quintet formed of members of the Hungarian State Opera. During the program, six sonnets written by Vivaldi in the musical score will also be performed.

GOLDEN BASIS OF OUR MAPS – Specialties of a Cosmographic Atlas 6. – Golden Age of the Netherlands. Flemish and Dutch maps, atlases. Map treasures from the collection of Count Ferenc Széchényi.

POM POM, MIRR-MURR AND OTHERS
Tunes composed by Zsolt Pethő for these series and the cartoon characters have been remembered by millions of people. Bequest of the composer, who died last year, is a new, treasured part of the Music Collection of NSZL. Animated cartoons will be revived, and you can get an insight into the workshop secrets of composing motion picture soundtracks via interesting documents, from an official invitation letter, through illustrated “storyboards” and sketches, right to the “finished compositions”.

A HIDING ADY MANUSCRIPT
A recently discovered letter in the stock of the Library of Book History, Library and Information and other interesting manuscripts in a book published in 1918!

Exhibition entitled “The song may not have been forgotten”, with special guided tours. So far unpublished treasures, manuscript letters, photos taken of János Arany’s friend featured in our exhibition on Hungarian poet Mihály Tompa, who was also born in 1817.

From desktop to electronic manuscript archive, from floppy to disc shelf. Special digitizing devices during operation – WHO WILL PRESERVE THE DIGITAL WORLD? – Collection of documents having vanished from the internet, and an insight into the collection of web archiving in progress.

ADVENTURE TOUR IN THE DARK REPOSITORIES
Roaming with a flashlight! Curiosities from the history of periodicals, from the 1500s, via Miklós Radnóti, up until the present day! Some special publications of our Newspaper Collection!
Hours:  from 18:00 every hour for 1 hour, for groups of 20 people.
Venue: Director-General’s corridor (in front of Széchényi cabinet on Floor 5)

WALK WITH US IN THE BUILDING!
From the plans of Miklós Ybl, via Hauszmann’s construction work, through the Horthy Era, to the time (1985) when NSZL moved in its present premises!
Hours: from 18:30 until 00:30, every hour
Meeting point: Stairway (in front of the Fadrusz statues)

Our Reading Rooms will be open until midnight.

Discount registration: during the night, a 50% discount will be given off the annual NSZL registration fee.

FRAGOLA ICE CREAM next to the Info Desk, Golden Dumplings in the buffet and WINE TASTING on the balcony

During the night, our visitors can taste award-winning wines produced by Jackfall Wine Manufactory, founded in Villány in 2001.

Jackfall is the Swabian name for Kisjakabfalva where the wine manufactory is located. This fabulous small village can be found 2 kilometers of Villány, and the family winery is operating on 13 hectares.
