At 1 p.m. on August 5 and 12, guided tours will be held at our exhibition entitled Zichy’s Drawn Heroes.

Here is an excerpt from an interview made with Rita Szűts-Novák, curator of the exhibition:

“Did Zichy leave Hungary merely for an art teacher’s job and quit the Viennese Academy of Arts just to travel to St. Petersburg?

Rita Szűts-Novák: The job had originally been offered to his master in Vienna, Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, but he recommended Zichy instead of himself. The job was to give lessons in drawing to Princess Catherine, daughter of the Russian Tsar’s younger brother. Before reaching St. Petersburg, Zichy traveled to quite a few European countries and visited, among others, Gleichenberg, Berlin, Florence and Nice. As the story goes, on the first occasion, Zichy had to leave the imperial court of the Tsar because he got involved with Catherine. However, it is more likely that he was sacked for his political views on the Hungarian freedom fight and on the Russian intervention.”
