The text – memory – image relation proposes a theoretical framework in which a complete series of diverse and rich studies can be inserted. Indeed, the volume of essays edited of the material of the Research Session of National Széchényi Library between December 2010 and January 2011 opens a fascinating horizon of intermediality and interdisciplinarity. The institutional, spiritual, intellectual, emotional and even personal references of the library are clearly linked to the volume, therefore the title (also) holds the meaning of a cross-sectional encounter between the different standpoints and interpretations of the reviewers who all gain rich professional experience from the complex practice of reading, writing and commenting. Their discourses differ also methodically from each other, and summarize the narrations related to source, event, person and institution related to, or documented and represented by certain media.

After presenting the comprehensive approach of guest lecturers academic historian of arts Ernő Marosi and historian of literature Iván Horváth, the volume organizes the writings around two main topics. The first consists of works on the medieval and early modern period, their book culture and usage habits. Also some works related to language relics are included in this part, inspired by the 2009 language relics exhibition that our visitors might still remember. The studies in the second unit analyze pictures and illustrations mostly from between the 18th and 20th centuries, and explore their origin. This is the thematic structure in which our volume presents the new results of research within or related to our institution.
