GIUSEPPE VERDI AND HUNGARY
National Széchényi Library – Italian Cultural Centre, Budapest
October 25, 2001 – January 26, 2002

The exhibition organized by the National Széchényi Library in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Centre of Budapest was dedicated to the Hungarian reception of the great Italian composer’s art on the centennial anniversary of his death. These masterpieces of music heritage were displayed by original documents and works of art from various collections of the Music Collection, the Theatre History Collection and the General Collection of the National Széchényi Library; the Hungarian State Opera House and Liszt Ferenc Memorial Museum and Research Centre; accompanied by the valuable pieces of correspondence between Verdi and his librettist Arrigo Boito from Istituto Nazionale di Studi Verdiani, Parma. The unique pieces of primary source materials concerning the maestro’s activity exhibit the core of these rich collections including scores, manuscript and printed librettos, graphic and photo images, playbills of Hungarian premieres and foreign guest performances, set and costume designs. The final section of the exhibition gives an overview of the Verdi cult as reflected in the transcriptions of Ferenc Liszt, the world-famous Hungarian virtuoso pianist and composer.
