At 7 p.m. on November 23, 2017, a joint festive concert of Kaláka Ensemble and Péter Huzella will start in National Széchényi Library. The event will celebrate Hungarian poet János Arany who was born 200 years ago.
Ever since its formation in 1969, Kaláka Ensemble has set to music several poems by János Arany. Ten years ago, in 2007, a disc presenting a collection of musical settings of János Arany’s poems was published, as part of the so-called Hangzó Helikon series. In addition to a bunch of old hits, the collection included several new songs. By now, these songs have become well-known pieces of the folk music group’s extensive repertoire.
It was in the mid-70s that Kaláka Ensemble started performing longer poems by Arany, and it was then that music settings to A bajusz (The Mustache), A walesi bárdok (The Bards of Wales), Zách Klára (Klara Zach) and Tetemrehívás (Trial of the Coffin) were composed. “It’s still unforgettable how The Bards of Wales »sang« during Kaláka’s first tour of Transylvania in 1981”– says the official website of the ensemble.
A great hit entitled Népdal (Folk Song) was recorded on the jubilee album entitled Kaláka 25 in 1994, and a family album entitled Családi kör (Family Circle) came out in 2001.
On several occasions during the János Arany Memorial Year, Kaláka Ensemble performed on stage together with Péter Huzella who, from 1975 onwards, was a member of the music group for 20 years. As part of the festivities in NSZL between November 23 and 25, 2017, Kaláka and Péter Huzella will be heard singing poems by Arany together.
