The series entitled Orientalists in NSZL will be continued with a lecture by Mária Ivanics on February 21, 2018. The lecturer will present the image of an ideal leader on the steppe, in societies that had remained on the level of tribal alliance, via the analysis of a late 17th century source in Eastern Turkish, originating from the area of the Volga.

The lecture will present the image of an ideal leader on the steppe, in societies that had not developed into an empire but remained on the level of tribal alliance, via the analysis of a late 17th century source in Eastern Turkish, originating from the area of the Volga. Mária Ivanics will discuss the nomadic ruler’s legitimation, taking into account his insignias (special characteristics) one by one. She will also describe the leader’s personality traits, going into detail as regards what kind of external and internal qualities had been expected from them, what tasks had been assigned to the ruler, and how a clan society had to be organized. The lecture will also discuss 
[3]the special clan characteristics of the clans mentioned in the source.

Main aim of the lectures, discussions and book presentations, to be held once in a month and starting at 5 p.m. on Wednesdays, is to provide the general public with state-of-the-art knowledge on issues covering various fields and periods, and on the latest research results by lectures delivered by internationally renowned Hungarian researchers.
