On March 9, 2018, NSZL will present a book published jointly with L’Harmattan Publishing House at the FUGA Center of Architecture. The book deals with the housing issue in the 1950s in Hungary.
[1]L’Harmattan Publishing House [2] and National Széchényi Library jointly published a book entitled Socialist Housing? – The Housing Issue in the 1950s in Hungary, edited by Márkus Keller.
The book will be presented at 6 p.m. on Friday March 9, 2018 at the FUGA [3] Center of Architecture (5 Petőfi Sándor Street, Budapest, H-1052).
The volume will be presented by historian János Rainer M., Doctor of Science (DSc), university professor, and architect Barnabás Winkler, full member of the Széchenyi Academy of Literature and Arts, honorary university professor.

From the blurb of the volume: “The housing issue that emerged in the middle of the 19th century and has been valid until today focused on two major issues: how can people be provided with an adequate home at a reasonable price, and what kind of living or lifestyle could be created and supported by the newly built apartments?
The book discusses the answers given to these dilemmas by Stalinism in the 1950s in Hungary, and how the so-called »Socialist lifestyle« emerging from these answers affected people's everyday lives.
PhD Márkus Keller, historian, sociologist is a research fellow of the 1956 Institute of National Széchényi Library and associate professor of the Department of Historical Sociology at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Eötvös Loránd University. He has published books and essays on 19th-20th century social history, on the methodology of comparative history writing, the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 and housing.”
