Representatives of the Hungarian and the foreign ‘early books’ profession express their best wishes with this volume of collected studies to Gedeon Borsa, the librarian emeritus of the National Széchényi Library, who is celebrating his 95th birthday. On this occasion, the staff of the Early Hungarian Printed Books research group of the NSZL has collected the Hungarian and German studies of their master, published previously in various periodicals after 2001, as a continuation of the collection of Könyvtörténti írások I-IV. (Book History Papers I-IV.) published between 1996 and 2000.

The first twelve studies discuss activities of printing houses, printers and publishers in Hungary (Buda, Beszterce, Debrecen, Kolozsvár, Szeben, etc.). Separate papers deal with the publishing history of the popular works of Osvát Laskai and Pelbárt Temesvári and with 16th century prints from the Low Countries kept in the National Library in Vienna. The second group consists of methodological articles. They show how the author has followed important international undertakings of book history and reported on the resulting bibliographies and catalogues, and how, by clarifying the principles and suggesting practical implementation, he has shown a very useful and tractable direction for domestic retrospective bibliography, printing history and typeface research.

The final section of the volume gives a detailed, bibliographical overview of Gedeon Borsa's rich body of work – his books, studies and book reviews – starting with his first article published in 1954.

Booklets of Hungarian Book Review and MOKKA-R Association

For centuries, books were the only means of passing on cultural values, so the history of books is related to all the areas of cultural history. No wonder that a number of new institutions for presenting book culture history are currently being set up. As one of Europe’s oldest book history periodicals, Hungarian Book Review cannot assume the publication of all the writings on book history in Hungary, it has joined MOKKA-R (the old books section of Hungarian National Joint Catalogue Association), an entity founded in 1994 to coordinate the elaboration of old books. Our series of booklets presents primarily the lectures held at the MOKKA-R department sessions, but also gives room for works on book history with larger extent than publishable in Hungarian Book Review.

The publishers of the series are NSZL, the Institute for Literary Studies of the Hungarian Academy of Science, and MOKKA-R Association.
